Here is a gallery of properties previously featured on the Taking Pride page. Summer 2009 Spring is past, and Autumn approaches soon enough, but there is beauty to be found in Broadway in the summertime also. Gardens are still in full bloom, and renovations abound. Here is just a sampling of some of the beautiful landscaping to be found in our neighborhood. Some of the homes you'll recognize right away, while others you may not. That's a good excuse to take a walk or bike ride around Broadway to see if you can find the address for these photos! (Click on each photo for a larger image) June 2009
The day lilies are in full bloom throughout the corners of Broadway. This patch is at the corner of 8th Avenue and 17th Street.
Dan Cleveland is rebuilding the back porch at his Italianate home at 730 19th Street. Take a stroll by and you'll see the details beautifully restored, including dentil molding and the arched header.
Beautiful purple petunias hang from the front porch at 921 21st Street.
The owners of 905 21st Street have also been busy, replacing siding in preparation for a future paint job.
Truly one of the most gorgeous front yards in Broadway, the lilies at 815 17th Street, owned by Gregory and Judy Mayer, are in full bloom.
Another sure sign of summer in Broadway, the hydrangeas are in full bloom at 741 22nd Street, making a beautiful entrance to the home of Alan and Brenda Carmen.
November 2008
836 23rd Street is nearing the completion of their front porch, based on the original that had been removed. As you can also see, they definitely got in the Halloween spirit!
The front porch at 2208 7th Avenue, which now houses the offices of Dr. Frances Ricketts, is also undergoing repairs. The bases of the columns had been deteriorating to the point of causing the railings to bow several inches. A new porch floor and column repairs will ensure that this wraparound porch, restored in the early 90s, will last for many years to come.
The Matherlys at 834 23rd Street recently completed a new paint job on the front of their house, in addition to the porch restoration completed earlier this summer. The bright color scheme definitely stands out against the Fall leaves.
August 2008
Michael & Patricia Mazrum, owners of the historic George White House at 603 23rd Street, have always maintained a beautiful entrance to their home.
The lilies are in full bloom at 800 17th Street, lining the front sidewalk and front porch.
The side entrance at 1202 21st Street, is beautifully maintained, with flowers and plantings lining the steps.
This home at 1029 20th Street, owned by the Jones, is lined with cone flowers and lilies. On one of Broadway's main thoroughfares, it truly is a wonderful display of pride in our neighborhood.
Linda and Gary Rowe may live on the southern edge of Broadway at 1231 21st Street, but a walk by their home is worth the trip up the hill, simply to view their beautiful flower garden on 13th Avenue.
July 2008
Bill and Wendy Rowand get in the patriotic spirit with their red white and blue bunting at 536 23rd Street.
1301 17th Street also gets in the spirit of Independence day with bunting and the American flag flying proudly. Also notice the beautiful petunias lining the rails of the front steps.
The owner of this house at 1231 19th Street maintains a gorgeous front landscape, with flower boxes and hostas lining the edge of the retaining wall.
The Matherlys are restoring their front porch at 834 23rd Street, with the help of neighborhood resident Phil Douglas. Notice the beautiful wainscot ceiling and attention to detail on the columns and column bases,
Right next door at 836 23rd Street, the front porch is also nearing completion, with the addition of new steps on the left side.
The Roelens have been hard at work at 754 23rd Street, slowly unveiling the artificial siding and opening the front porch. Check out their progress on their own website at www.emikalima.com

Deb Kuntzi and Paul Magnusson at 842 20th Street are always in the Holiday spirit - no matter which holiday! But the beautiful garland on the porch railing, and lanterns lining the front sidewalk are a cheerful addition to the Holiday season.
Robert West is the owner of this beautifully maintained home at 1007 19th Street. It has seen many different paint schemes over the years, but the soft pink pallet chosen makes this home stand out from the crowd.
The garland is already hung at 1004 20th Street, with red bows and a large wreath to welcome visitors to Broadway.
October - November 2007
A beautiful new paint job in shades of green liven up 925 22nd Street. William and Lori Mariner are the owners of this home.
The Broadway townhomes at 936-944 22nd Street have some beautiful landscaping, including this arrangement on the northern edge of the property.
These beautiful hydrangeas, a very popular flower during the Victorian era, line the southern wall of the Wagner House at 902 22nd Street.
A sure sign of autumn is the beautiful harvest arrangements lining many of the porches in Broadway. Here at 734 23rd Street, they have already gotten in the spirit of the season.
Recognize this home from the banner at the top of the page? It's 1710 Lincoln Court, and it is truly one of the hidden gems of Broadway. Diane VonDresky started by "unveiling" her home of the aluminum siding in the late 90's and choosing a wonderful paint scheme. A new garage to match the home was added a few years later, and then the retaining walls and landscaping. Take a walk through Lincoln Court to admire this home before the frost hits for the winter!
September 2007
The local landmark known as Stearns Cottage at 1915 9th Avenue has recently been painted. The vibrant colors on this home make it stand out as one of the "little gems" of Broadway.
The Thomers at 901 21st Street always have a beautifully maintained yard and home. The gorgeous shrubbery atop their fence provide a wonderful entrance to the home.
This home at 815 23rd Street is currently for sale, but has been beautifully restored over the past few years. Karolyn Williams has done a total restoration inside and out, and color scheme has been well-chosen to highlight the details of the home.
Another one of Broadway's beautiful cottages, this home at 809 21st Street certainly catches your eye. Lyle Horton is the owner of this house, and they are working on repainting the bold colors chosen by the previous owners. The white picket fence in front is the finishing touch!
The Carother's home at 839 23rd Street and Otto's home at 903 23rd Street provide a wonderful gateway into Broadway on 9th Avenue. Known for their immaculate landscapes and well-maintained homes, they are great examples of showing pride in the neighborhood. August 2007
Laura O'Brien recently painted her home at 1048 22nd Street. The beautiful lavender paint scheme, along with the well-kept landscape makes this property truly stand out.
Drive down 20th Street, and it's hard to miss the beautiful gardens lining the front lawn of 1416 20th Street, owned by Gregory and Susan Krogman. Both beautiful and practical, these gardens help retain runoff while making the homes truly stand out.
Steve and Hope McAtee test out a color scheme on their front windows of 735 22nd Street. The McAtee's have been repainting all the windows around their home, before eventually hoping to "unveil" their home down the line.
Beautiful flowers line the new curb at 945 22nd Street, giving some color to 10th Avenue.
This new cedar fence hides a "secret garden" at 852 19th Street. With wonderful roses and other flowers, and the original garage in the background, this small side yard takes you back to the Victorian era. |
